Minh Vu

Minh Vu recently came to the United States from Vietnam to pursue an education in art. He is attending the Academy of Art University where he has already earned his Bachelor of Fine Art Degree and is now working on his Master’s Degree. Minh believes the power and uniqueness of painting is that you can communicate with anyone without saying a word or using verbal language. His subjects are not something strange or unfamiliar. He paints things with much familiarity in his daily life. However, the way he expresses it, his visual language, will make it the way people have not seen it before. Which will invite people to think and see things in new perspectives.

“Most of us when we start a conversation with any strangers or friends, we frequently talk about are weather, sports and food. But food is what I am most drawn into because it is simple, primitive idea but very powerful thing. When people talk about food we stay true to ourselves, we know what we love and what we don’t. People have a lot of opinions about food and we can talk about food easily. We love finding out who likes eating the things we like. We are excited to learn about new kinds of food. First we eat to survive, but now we eat to enjoy and make our life more interesting.”

“My painting is my way to communicate with people. I love to hear that my paintings make people feel hungry, and this is what I hear all the time! Also, every country is so proud of its own food because it is the soul of the people, the nation, their stories and history. When I paint food, I don’t only paint what I like to eat or what I ate today. What I want to do with my art is to capture, reminisce and convey different facets of food from my own memories and experiences. I want to trigger memories of the viewers if they happen to have experienced the food I paint. I want to trigger curiosity if people don’t know what kind of food I paint. Everyone can engage because I am inviting the viewers into the world of food in my paintings.”
