Steffen Faisst

Steffen Faisst was born in Germany, and is an educated biologist and has worked in Research and Development in Germany, France and – for the last 16 years – Denmark. The curiosity and focus on detail that helped him to be a researcher also led Steffen to detect the beauty of these minute water worlds. Since he was a student, Steffen has engaged in close-up and macro photography of still motifs. The experience he’s gained from these exercises helped him to engage in close-up and macro photography of quickly moving water phenomena.

“Through my photography, I try to visualize the forms and colors that can be found in our waters. Water does not possess any specific shape or color by itself, but is formed and stained by the physical forces and appearances surrounding it. Thus, water can take an unlimited number of fugacious forms and colors, most of which pass unperceived. But when frozen in a photograph, these fugacious forms and colors become observable and look like artworks created by human artists. I want to convey these fascinating pictures of naturally crafted art to the beholder, who may realize the beauty to be found in our everyday environment that we take for granted. Many artists have been inspired by water. One of the most famous artists obsessed by water was Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo produced hundreds of drawings to study water movement, and described in his manuscripts the physical phenomena of reflection and refraction of light by moving water, and wrote of the 'beautiful spectacles of rippling water. I am mainly interested in depicting the small natural worlds that often pass unnoticed, and that sometimes may get another meaning when taken out of context.”
