Breaking the Spell

"Breaking the Spell by Ann Calandro is a 28" by 24" mixed-media, collage which was completed in 2009. The title refers to the fairy tale about a wicked stepmother who puts seven brothers under a spell that turns them into birds. Their one sister is the only person who can break the spell. She must knit seven sweaters for her seven brothers within a year, and once they put on the sweaters they will turn back into young men. As the deadline nears and the birds hover close to her, she throws the finished sweaters over them, save for the sweater for the young brother, which lacks one sleeve and leaves him with one wing. That's why the young man in the collage has feather along one arm.
