About the Artist: "I create images of unfamiliar subjects using concepts from exobiology, artificial evolution, technology-infused ecosystems and mathematics. Much of my work is focused on stimulating emotions or experiences associated with viewing objects of unknown origin, with no name, and with no overtly human connection. The subjects of my work, unearthly or unnatural creatures and plants, have a visual present they are what you see. Some of these creatures display clues as to how they came to be, but others have a surreal aspect to their origins. They have no obvious natural origin, yet here they are ensconced in a non-anthropoid environment. All my work is done by hand using traditional drawing and drafting methods. I occasionally use analog slide rules for needed calculations and simplified versions of baroque and renaissance planar projection tools. Many of my drawings include very detailed arid landscapes and skis and a few of my works are just graphite landscapes." - Andrew Nelson
Phytoborg 3
"Phytoborg 3 is part of a series of drawings that depict astrobiologyical landscapes. A Phytoborg is a vegetative lifeform that fuses machine and living plant-like elements. These vegetative machine-plants might be post-technology life or exo-biological forms of life. The spheroid tree in Phytoborg 3 is organic in appearance, but is covered by square shapes that suggest a machine or non-biological origin. [...] How would a landscape feel if it were occupied by something that was truly not us Is there some common nature shared by all possible forms of life, even those that might never come to pass Perhaps nature will fuse biology and feral technology into future ecosystems bearing only the slightest hint of their anthropoid origins. Exploring the nature of being uniquely human is a deep trope in art, past and present. But is our supposed uniqueness really our most important aspect Maybe what makes us alive is more important than what makes us human." ~ Andrew L. Nelson.
