- Cartmel is a very tranquil and picturesque village set in Cumbria England. Situated 2.2 miles north west of Grange-Over-Sands it was once known as Kirby in Cartmel and is the location for the 12th century Cartmel Priory which the village is famous for, with its many stained glass windows, modern sculptures plus its ancient choir stalls. It also boasts a splendid racecourse which has brought it much fame and fortune over the years bringing in thousands of visitors for several of its annual race meetings each year. With its many gentle and meandering paths, pretty cottages and inns, is what makes Cartmel an artist's paradise. Its history dates back to the 7th century. The earliest record of this was from AD 674 when King Ecgfrith of Northumbria annexed this region. "I once went there many years ago on a day trip organized by the Greenlands Art Society Blackpool, which is now sadly disbanded. A group of us stopped to watch some sheep grazing in one of the many fields, as I rested on the wall to get a better angle in which to photograph them, one of the sheep appeared to be posing for the camera.
